CANON May 21 – June 6, 2012 Experiment

Research focus: measure and budget the sources and sinks of ammonium in one of the environments of the California Current System     June High Level Plan
This is part one of a two part series, the with second part to be conducted in September 2012.

Spring CANON12 - Studies in the shelf region

The Spring focus was on the upwelling plume, the upwelling shadow in northern Monterey Bay and the front in between them. Figure 7Bio shows the mean sea surface temperature and fluorescence line height (a proxy for chlorophyll) for the May-June period with the proposed locations of AUV, glider and ship tracks. The list of assets and their dates is given below.

  • Deploy Waveglider and Webb gliders on May 21 for reconnaissance phase (see attached document for repeat transects), recover on June 7 or 8
  • Deploy Spray glider on May 25 for reconnaissance phase (see attached document for repeat transects), recover on June 7 or 8
  • Deploy LRAUV Daphne May 29 (Tuesday) with Turbulence Sensor for transect along 36.9N. Recover LRAUV Daphne May 31 (Thursday). Deploy LRAUV Tethys May 31. June 6
  • Deploy LRAUV Daphne June 4th (Monday). Recover both LRAUVs no later than June 8th.
  • Deploy Dorado May, 29, 30, 31 (three evenings) with LIST and LIST Holo, make transect offshore along 36.9, collect water on the return transect in upwelling plume, front and shadow. Repeat June 5, 6.
  • Deploy R/V Fulmar May 29, 30, 31, and maybe June 1 deploy drifters along 36.9 and collect water on the return transect in upwelling plume, front and shadow. Repeat June 5, 6, 7, and maybe 8. Drifters recovered daily unless clear that they will not exit region rapidly.

About STOQS

STOQS (Spatial Temporal Oceanographic Query System) is a geospatial database web application designed for providing efficient access to in situ oceanographic measurement data across any dimension. Where "dimension" is considered in the broadest sense, for example: any spatial dimension, time, the collection of platforms, any other parameter value in the database.

Use Case
Precondition:

Observational data from a variety of platforms (Gliders, AUVs, Shipboard systems) are individually available from OPeNDAP servers.

Goal:

Retrieve data by parameter name across all platforms in a specific area over a specific span of time

Data Management Niche

STOQS complements other data management technologies such as NetCDF and OPeNDAP by providing an ability to index data retrieval across parameter and spatial dimensions in addition to the a priori indexed coordinate dimensions of CF-NetCDF. It also provides a functional bridge between NetCDF and Geographic Information Systems technologies.

Operation

Data is loaded into STOQS from a variety of data sources, including OPeNDAP data sets, other relational databases, and flat files. Products are delivered in a variety of formats, including KML, via REST-style web requests. STOQS was developed at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and is used within the Oceanographic Decision Support System (ODSS) to provide data management for campaign-oriented multi-platform investigations of oceanographic processes.

The MBARI Oceanographic Decision Support System (ODSS) hosts http://odss.mbari.org/canon/default/query/ to provide access to upper water column in situ measurement data collected as part of the Controlled, Agile and Novel Observing Network (CANON) project.
